WHAT IS THE POINT?

WHAT IS THE POINT?

WHAT IS THE POINT? Is a several stage conceptual artwork loosely representing a lifecycle and taking some place in Oxford, UK.

The first stage, conception, has already occurred, in the mind of the artist (@Markthestars), so the next/present stage is called gestation. In this stage the artist is constructing and developing the artwork, for it to be unveiled in the next stage that is called birth. At birth, the ‘physically entering the world’ stage, there will be a small open air performance/play, date and time and exact location (within Oxford) to be set soon.

Throughout all stages, and from now on, folk are invited to answer the question “What is the point?” on Twitter. If you go to @Markthestars, you’ll see the pinned tweet, inviting your reply and retweet to that question.

The next stage, after WHAT IS THE POINT? has been born/unveiled, will be the period called life. Folk will be able to see the minimalist conceptual sculpture standing for a period of some days. Seeing the sculpture may invite more specific answers to the question “what is the point?” as in ‘what is the point of the sculpture?’

At the end of the life stage, there will naturally come the stage of death. For death, the artist will at last give a definition of the meaning of the sculpture and it’s form, answering the question ‘what is the point?’ of the sculpture. To define something (de finis) can also mean to end it. The sculpture will then be dismantled/removed.

That is not the final stage though, because there is next the stage called letting go/afterlife. In this stage the sculpture is given away free to someone who answered the question ‘what is the point?’ well. They can then resurrect the sculpture elsewhere.

Finally, in the last stage called descendants, some additional ‘prizes’ may be a number of artist approved permissions to create an edition of the sculpture according to the plans - as there may be many interesting/winning answers to the question “what is the point?”.
